Several police officers patrolled the city streets in an effort to keep drivers intoxicated.
On Sunday night, 147 stops were made and eleven sobriety tests were performed in the field. Three people were arrested for driving under the influence.
In recent years, the police department could have run DUI checkpoints, but officers say the pandemic has changed its operations.
“We come into contact with many of these drivers during checkpoints and we just want to try to limit exposure to officers and the public,” said Fresno Sgt. Ritchie O’Dell.
If convicted, a first DUI offense could result in a multitude of sentences, including three to five years of probation and a fine of at least $ 390.
With restrictions on the indoor table due to the pandemic, many bars and breweries also had to change their game day plan.
At the Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company, staff saw fewer people but more beer sales.
Manager William Compton said the Super Bowl does not usually bring large crowds, but discounts on delivery bring more profits.
“With Super Bowl Sunday seems to be more of a family affair. It’s more of a holiday for people and it’s something people like to celebrate at home,” Compton said.
Sgt. O’Dell said that with more people celebrating at home, the department’s patrol efforts have been citywide.
