The number of people over the age of 75 with serious health conditions who died after receiving vaccines for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Norway rose on Saturday to 29. The Scandinavian country, which has inoculated more than 25,000 people since began the vaccination attempt on December 27 last year, confirmed the deaths.

Earlier, the age group believed to be in danger was over 80, but Saturday’s six fresh deaths reduced it to 75 and also raised questions about which groups to target in the program. national inoculation.

Here’s what we know so far:

– The Covid-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech is the only one available in Norway and all deaths appear to be related to it, according to the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NMA).

– The NMA wrote to the Bloomberg news agency and confirmed that although most people experienced the expected side effects of the vaccine, 13 deaths were assessed and another 16 are being examined because they were caused by it. “There are 13 deaths that have been assessed and we are aware of another 16 deaths that are currently being assessed,” the agency said, adding that all reported deaths were related to “elderly people with severe underlying disorders.”

– Side effects seen in most people include nausea and vomiting, fever, local reactions at the injection site and worsening of their underlying condition. According to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), the vaccine could have marginal or no benefits for those who have a very short lifespan anyway. For those with the most severe fragility, even the relatively mild side effects of the vaccine can have serious consequences, he added.

– Pfizer said it is investigating the deaths together with BioNTech and NIPH, and the agency found that “the number of incidents so far is not alarming and is in line with expectations”.

– However, Norway did not say that younger and healthier people should avoid vaccination.
