The national government has declared 2021 a tribute to the Nobel Prize in Medicine Caesar Milstein, in recognition of its “deep commitment to science” and for promoting “universal access and availability of knowledge for the benefit of society as a whole, giving up personal economic benefits and rewards”.
So it was decided by decree 18, published today in the Official Gazette, signed by President Alberto Fernández and Chief of Staff Santiago Cafiero.
The norm establishes that during the year “all the official documentation of the national, centralized and decentralized public administration, as well as in the autonomous entities dependent on it, must bear the legend: “2021 – the year of the tribute to the Nobel Prize for Medicine Dr. César Milstein”.
In the recitals, it states that This year marks the 60th anniversary of Milstein’s return to Argentina, when he was appointed head of the molecular biology department of the National Institute of Microbiology Carlos Malbrán, currently the National Administration of Laboratories and Institutes „Dr. Carlos Malbrán ”(ANLIS).
In this context, he stressed that “The legacy of Dr. César Milstein has crossed the country’s borders, and his discovery of monoclonal antibodies has been an important milestone in the history of medicine and has influenced various specialties such as immunology, oncology, biotechnology and industry.”.
In addition, he pondered that “as a result of these findings, in recent years it has been possible to develop various innovative drugs, such as drugs to prevent transplant rejection, passive immunization for respiratory syncytial virus, therapies for asthma and mediated diseases. immune system, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and Crohn’s disease or suppurative hydradenitis, and improved survival rates and quality of life in cancer patients. “
He also pointed out that this “scientific discovery made together with the British Niels Kai Jerne and the German Georges Jean Franz ¨Köhler brought him recognition in 1984 by awarding him the Nobel Prize in Medicine”.
