2021 Masters: a triple bogey and a “lucky” eagle part of Jordan Spieth 71

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A few scratches. Some theatrical.

“I think it’s a kind of typical Masters round,” said Jordan Spieth, laughing.

A triple tree bogey, a lucky chip-in for the eagle and a lot of well-hit shots added to a 1 under 71 for Spieth in the opening round at Augusta National.

Traveling throughout the day at 1 under, Spieth blew his way into the trees on the right on the ninth hole. Rather than throw himself into the fairway, he decided to take a risk – trying to keep his approach down through the trees and running near the greenery. Instead, his shot bounced off a tree and landed behind him. From there, he came out of the green, rose to 5 feet and tripled for the triple.

“I think he lives and learns,” Spieth said. “It’s hard to swallow, because knowing the golf course is very difficult and I had 1 under my hair, pull it on the fairway, make a bogey, you’re equal at the turn, it’s a pretty good score. But, unfortunately, I’m still in that 18-year-old way from last week “- his total winner at the Valero Texas Open, where he ended a drought without a win for almost four years -” and trying to capitalize on and get every shot that I can.

“Fortunately, I kind of got rid of that and I’m still on tour.”

Indeed, Spieth came back with a 15-foot birdie for 10 and then added four more pars to settle down. On par-5 15of, flew an iron 6 in the middle of the green – “I can’t tell you the last time I had an iron 6 in that hole” – but rolled it on its back. His ball nestled slightly on the periphery, and the feather jumped into the ball.

“I was shocked by the strike,” he said.

His height did not turn, he started running on the slope, gathering speed and then collapsed into the pin for an unlikely eagle 3.

“I mean, the idea is to publish it online and it was very, very lucky,” he said. “Probably the luckiest break I’ve ever had here, if not anywhere, because it was at least a three-shot break. No matter how many shots I hit there were a yard earlier in the round, it was more than offset there. ā€

Two bets to end gave Spieth 71 in his attempt to win a second green jacket. He is six shots behind leader Justin Rose.

“I’m glad the course is firm if you come back six after a round,” Spieth said. “So I’m not really going to focus on Rosey. This is a round. I will only assume that this golf course will be just as challenging and I will choose your places. ā€
