1 dead, another critically injured when a vehicle was shot near Goleta | Local news

Two people were found shot in a vehicle near Goleta on Thursday afternoon, prompting a search for the shooter, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lieutenant Erik Raney.

The sheriff’s deputies, county firefighters and AMR ambulances were sent shortly after 12:30 to the 600 block of Burtis Street near Hollister Elementary School.

They found two victims in a parked vehicle, a late Audi sedan, Raney said.

The passenger of the vehicle was declared dead on the spot, and the driver was taken urgently to the Santa Barbara Cottage hospital.

Deputies set a perimeter around the site and searched for a single suspect who allegedly fled on foot, Raney said.

He added that the suspect – described as a 20-year-old white man with dark hair, possibly wearing blue jeans and a gray shirt – is considered “armed and dangerous”.

It appears a sheriff’s helicopter and K-9 crews were brought in for a search.

Meanwhile, a shelter order is being issued in place for residents south of Hollister Avenue, between Patterson Avenue and Turnpike Road.

The neighborhood involved returns to the Atascadero creek and then to More Mesa, and deputies searched the area for a suspect.

The shootings were reported by a minor who fled the office at Hollister School, Raney said.

Additional details were not immediately available.
