FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, one person died after a vehicle crashed into a retention pond on Fleming Island early Sunday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol website shows that soldiers were called in at around 3:25 a.m. for the deadly crash in Neptune Park off Thunderbolt Road.
The sheriff’s office said the dive team responded. Additionally, Clay County Fire and Rescue was on the scene.
Later in the morning, a tow truck pulled the car, a silver four-door Nissan Altima, out of the retention pond.
Several neighbors told News4Jax that they often hear cars racing on Thunderbolt Road leading to the park where the pond is located. They said Sunday around 2am was no different.
“They just race down the street and it’s very scary,” said a neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified. “It’s right behind the school, and there are a lot of little kids in this community.”
The Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation.
