Seattle Seahawks increase depth of defensive line, adds Kerry Hyder, re-signs Benson Mayowa, sources say

SEATTLE – Seattle Seahawks added a track to their pace and brought it back Tuesday, accepting deals with Kerry Hyder and Benson Mayowa.

Agent Erik Burkhardt told Adam Schefter of ESPN that Hyder’s business is three years and $ 16.5 million, an increase of $ 17.5 million with incentives.

Mayowa, who played in Seattle last season, returns to the Seahawks with a two-year deal that will likely include at least an additional year of payoff purposes, a source told ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

Both Hyder and Mayowa will turn 30 before the start of next season.

Hyder set a career high with 8.5 sacks in 16 games with the San Francisco 49ers last season while playing under coordinator Robert Saleh, a Pete Carroll disciple who leads a Seattle-like defense. The 49ers signed Hyder for 6-2, £ 270 in free agency in the last off-season to be a rotation player who lined up as an attack and final, but became a starter due to injuries to Nick Bosa and Dee Ford and was the 49ers’ most productive defensive lineman, while he played the most on the sidelines.

Hyder had 8.0 sacks in 2016 with the Detroit Lions and has 18.5 since joining the league as a raw agent for Texas Tech in 2014. He also played for the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.

Mayowa had six sacks, seven loss attacks, two forced kicks and nine defender shots in 13 games with the Seahawks last season, missing three games with an ankle injury. He made nine starts, but saw a slight drop during the game, when the Seahawks replaced Carlos Dunlap, who became their owner.

Mayowa’s Pass Rush earned 16.2% of the league’s finish in the league and ranked in the Seahawks. Hyder was ranked 39th at 11.3%.

Mayowa had the best seven sacks of his career in 2019 with the Raiders, before meeting with the Seahawks in March last year with a $ 3.05 million one-year deal. After a slow start to their 2020 race, the Seahawks have recorded 37 sacks in the league in the last 10 weeks – Mayowa scoring four in that period.

He began his career as a raw agent in Idaho in 2013, spending his debut season in Seattle. He has 26 sacks in 100 career games over eight NFL seasons and has also played for the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.

Dunlap remains unsigned after his release from the Seahawks earlier this month, saving the team $ 14.1 million in limit space.

Pass-rush was the Seahawks’ biggest remaining need in the second week of free agency. Hyder and Mayowa join a group that has LJ Collier, Rasheem Green, Alton Robinson and Darrell Taylor at the end, with Jarran Reed and Poona Ford on the attack. Taylor, who was selected in the second round last year, began practicing at the end of the season, but did not play as a rookie due to a leg injury in college.

The Seahawks added a one-year cancellation to the contracts they gave back Chris Carson and center Ethan Pocic last week, something the team did not do before under general manager John Schneider and vice president of player administration Matt Thomas. This mechanism reduces the immediate fee of a player’s salary cap by dividing the signing bonus bonus, but creates dead money along the way, so it is equivalent to borrowing the cap in the following years.
