Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC received a free update on Tuesday that allows VR support, so now you can fool your brain into believing that you are flying a flight to Tokyo.
Our own Sam Loveridge wrote in July about how Microsoft Flight Simulator is an ace remedy for cockpit fever. “Getting on a plane is a million miles away, and yet here I rise above the Sydney Opera House,” Sam meditates. But imagine stepping into the cockpit in VR, a complete picture of the world below, presented in photorealistic quality. My PC can’t handle Flight Simulator in VR, so for now I can only dream of how incredibly captivating it must be.
Microsoft says that Flight Simulator VR supports “all OpenXR compatible headphones”, which means that the Windows Mixed Reality headset, Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Oculus Quest (with a connecting cable) should work very well.
The new Microsoft Flight Simulator update adds more than VR support, although of course this is the main feature. Sim Update 2 also includes two new training missions designed to help you take off and land with the Airbus A320neo, Live Weather has been enhanced with blue Weather data to account for snow and ice, and there is now an Airbus event A320neo Landing Challenge Spotlight. There are also a number of fixes and improvements in quality of life, which you can see in the full patch notes.
Well, what are you waiting for? The sky is a sign. Update your Microsoft Flight Simulator client to the latest version and don’t forget to write us a postcard.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is planning adding a bunch of locations in the UK in a January update.
